Guat_welcome

the vastness of its beautiful volcanic highlands.

Be the change!
This is the opportunity to make a change in the world and within yourself. You will be more than a tourist and are welcomed into the community by your hosts and introduced to the local culture as a guest. Build a connection with the people whose lives you will help change and make friendships that will last a lifetime.

Experience cultural immersion with connected involvement.
Leave the resorts behind and experience the authentic Spanish and Mayan culture that thrives in the area. Wander along Antigua’s cobblestone streets – Guatemala’s most beautiful colonial city. This adventure offers natural wonders, excitement and ancient culture.  Climb, hike, bike, horseback ride or zip line through the surrounding mountains and venture to one of the four nearby volcanoes.

Volunteering

Dig In!

Work alongside a dedicated team of fellow volunteers and local community members to help boost the completion of 6 new classrooms for the children of Melody school.

The structures we are building are made of concrete brick or block and the work often includes digging, mixing concrete, carrying and laying bricks.  There is a job for everyone and includes all levels of experience, skill and fitness.

Testimonials_Guat_Della“Heading to the worksite for day 5. How can one be so excited to pick up a shovel and make cement 5 days straight, well working alongside such an amazing group of people and listening to the children laugh in the background is truly inspiring. Thank you GiveGetGo for the most incredible week of my life, and it’s not over yet.”

Make It Happen!

Melody School is an initiative meant to provide schooling to underprivileged local children aged two to six years old through Canadian sponsors. In an area where less than 55% of the inhabitants are literate, Melody School’s children are all able to read and write by age six. GiveGetGo is leading volunteers to help build an expansion to this private school located in Chimaltenango, Guatemala.

The school’s vision is to provide education for each child from primary school through to completion of their secondary education, thus creating future leaders for the community. Our volunteers bring a boost both financially and spiritually to the building of this much needed project. To learn more about this commitment see our FAQs and Charities pages.

Testimonials_Guat_Linda“What I enjoyed the most about the volunteer experience was being able to see first hand how the build effected the people we were helping. I would definitely consider doing another GiveGetGo build and would encourage friends and family to try one too. This was one of our best vacations!”

Experience a different way of life!

The colourful traditions of the Maya are still part of the fabric of Guatemalan life. Melody school strongly believes in preserving and celebrating the children’s Mayan heritage, making the school environment rich with history and culture.

During the build our volunteers will have the chance to partake in such activities as:

  • Make corn masa (dough) from scratch – a practice that has a very long history, at least 3,500 years, and is based in Mayan mythology. After stone grinding the corn and calcium ingredients, cook and savour your very own handmade, authentic corn tortilla.
  • Try your hand at the intricate art of traditional Mayan weaving and learn how this craft has played an integral role in the lives of the Maya, communicating their personal identity and heritage.
  • Learn about the origins of Mayan cosmological spirituality and have your personal astrology read based on the 260-day ceremonial calendar used by the Maya for thousands of years.
  • Join a cultural tour that will bring the city of Antigua to life. Learn and discover the city’s history, cultural trends and restoration efforts as you explore it’s majestic ruins, Maya archeology, and the best museums in town.

After completing the build portion of the trip, volunteers on the Young Adult trip take an overnight excursion to experience sleeping on the crater’s edge of Pacaya volcano. Explore the lava fields, watch the sunset and toast marshmallows over the campfire. Volunteers will then venture to Lake Atitlan and stay at the beautiful cliffside hotel Casa del Mundo, where stunning sunsets light up the volcanic horizon. Kayak and hike through the natural beauty of Lake Atitlan and the surrounding villages that are renowned among backpackers for their unique untouched Mayan culture.

Volunteers on the Adult trip will travel to Lake Atitlan to the cliffside hotel of Casa del Mundo. During the 3 day 2 night stay they will participate in all kinds of adventures.  They can swim, kayak, take a boat to a local village were they can walk to some small galleries, visit a local weaving coop, participate in a local art class or just sit and relax and read a book while enjoying the majestic scenery surrounding them.  What ever their heart desires.
